Celebrating Cinco de Mayo

The world language department Spanish classes hosted a celebration of Cinco de Mayo. Our students sampled Latino juices, sodas, cakes, candies and snacks while enjoying a spirited round of Cinco de Mayo trivia. ¡Feliz Cinco de Mayo a todos!
Cinco de Mayo honors the resilience and pride of defending one’s family and community in the face of great adversity. It commemorates the May 5, 1862, Battle of Puebla, where a smaller, less-equipped Mexican army led by Gen. Ignacio Zaragoza defeated a larger and better-armed French force. Although the French later occupied Mexico, the victory became a lasting symbol of Mexican resistance and unity.
